*********************************************************** 32-BIT VIDEO CAPTURE FOR WINDOWS 95 *********************************************************** WARNING: This information is for Windows 95 users ONLY!!!!! *********************************************************** DO NOT USE THIS PROCEDURE WITH WINDOWS 3.1X A new, 32 bit Video Capture module is now available. The 32bit Video Capture module should improve Capture performance (fewer dropped frames) 5% to 10% on Pendium PCs, and even better on 486 PC's. This module is available on CompuServe, the REVEAL Internet FTP site, the REVEAL BBS, or through 900 7 DRIVERS. The file number of the 32 Bit Video Captire module is: 13041017.zip. THIS MODULE WORKS ONLY IN WIN95!, and you MUST have installed VE500 driver Ver 2.0. ************************************************************** WARNING: Win '95 will FREEZE, if the 32bit Capture icon is clicked using VE500 driver versions prior to Ver. 2.0. ************************************************************** NOTE: VE500 kits currently shipping contain VE500 Driver Ver 2.0. If you are still using VE500 Driver Ver 1.0, you will need to get Ver. 2.0 from CompuServe, the REVEAL Internet FTP site, the REVEAL BBS, or through 900 7 DRIVERS. The file number of the VE500 Driver is 13041001.zip. Download the VE500 driver and 32 bit capture driver and unzip them to a floppy diskette. ********************************************* When and why to use the 32 bit Video Capture ********************************************* If the number of dropped frames increased after you upgraded to Win 95, fist verify that you are using the VE500 driver Ver. 2.0. If not install Ver. 2.0 driver. Run SETUP.EXE on the "32-Bit Video Capture Utility" diskette you created from 13041017.zip. This procedure will upgrade the Video Capture program and create a new "32-Bit Video Capture" icon in the Ulead group. **************************************************************** The following notes apply to the new Video Capture Utility: The 32bit Capture module is missing several features found in the 16bit Capture Module., 1. "Shuttle Speed Control" is not available. Shuttle speed control can be used through the original Video Capture program for playback purposes. 2. The button to switch between VGA and External TV(the red switch button) is not available. To switch between VGA and External TV, use the "Reveal VE500 MJPG Video Capture Driver" in the Control Panel, or use the original Video Capture program. 3. There is no choice for Single frame capture to Image Editor in the Capture pull down menu. 4. Some of the default settings may need to be changed (i.e., frame rate setting, audio setting, etc.) 5. File Format under Preferences has been eliminated. 6. EPS(Encapsulated PostScript) file format does not work properly for single frame capture; therefore, it has been removed. 7. Media Studio 2.0 users: Save to Album either from Video Capture or Single Frame Capture does not work with this new 32-Bit Video Capture program. Use the original Video Capture program instead. VE500 TROUBLESHOOTING TIP Question: Why after creating my project I can play it to the Computer monitor but I get a blank screen when playing it to a VCR or a TV. Answer : When creating a video file in the Video Editor, in the dialog (CREATE VIDEO FILE ) box there is an OPTION button, click on that and make sure under compression driver you have MJPEG Reveal codec driver selected from the list and also check the width and height and make sure they are 320 x 240 respectively in order to get a full TV screen otherwise you will get a small screen. Also if you are in the Video Capture program you can click on VIEW and then on INFORMATION and that will tell you what type of compression is being used for the current project. If it says something other than Reveal Mjpeg Codec Driver then you will get the above symptom. ******************************************************** **********VE500 VIDEO EDITOR - TROUBLESHOOTING********* ******************************************************** Note: Software installation creates the directories: ULEAD2 - containing I/O files VSTUDIO2 - containing the program files ******************************************************** Subjects covered in this file: ------------------------------ No display in the preview window Another video card with capture capability in the system? (This comes with many programs, and is also installed during setup. IT IS BEST TO USE THE PROVIDED VERSION) -------------------------------------------------- SYSTEM.INI CHECK TO BE SURE THE FOLLOWING LINES ARE PRESENT IN SYSTEM.INI: [drivers] MSVIDEO=H55CAP.DRV VIDC.MJPG=H55JPG.DRV If the above lines are wrong or not present, either edit SYSTEM.INI to correct, or re-run the VE500 installation program. MOVIE CAPTURE creates a new section in SYSTEM.INI in which to store its settings. The section is called: [////FAST MJPG DRIVERS] -------------------------------------------------- IRQ AND PORT ADDRESS PROBLEMS If the software does not function properly (Ex. Video Capture will not record, or system becomes unstable after installing the VE500 software) there is probably a conflict. Use the VE500 Setup program to change the assignments for the VE500 until an option is found that works in the system. -------------------------------------------------- HARD DISKS It is best to have a large, fast hard disk to use with video. It is desirable to have the disk fairly empty and defragmented to reduce seek time. If the drive is large enough, it may be possible to create a partition close to the edge of the disk for use with video files. --------------------------------------------------- STACKER, DOUBLESPACE AND OTHER COMPRESSION SOFTWARE Because the compression software must process all data going to the Hard Drive, the data transfer speed is reduced, and quality suffers. Besides, the VE500 hardware already compresses the video data, and very little additional compression would occur. --------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------- DOS AND WINDOWS: WRITE ERROR CONTROL Switch off the DOS error controller by typing at the DOS Command prompt: "VERIFY OFF" and pressing ENTER or place it into AUTOEXEC.BAT. DOS Verify takes a lot of time, and is not important for video data. 32-BIT DISK ACCESS Test whether activating Windows 32-bit drive and file access functions improves the operation of the system. (DO THIS IN CTRL PANEL/386 Enh). This is not possible on some systems. {If it is possible, Windows accesses the Hard Disc without going through DOS, and significantly improves the data transfer rate. SWAP FILE Deactivate any Temporary Windows Swap File, or set up a Permanenent Swap File. SOFTWARE CACHES Switch off all Hard Disk write-back caches in the system, including SmartDrv. (Type SMARTDRV /x) DOUBLE BUFFERING Unless essential (e.g., when using a bus master SCSI controller for the Hard Disk) switch off double buffering, which slows down hard disk access. Use the /L option in Config.sys to force Smartdrv to set up write caches in conventional memory. WINDOWS FOR WORKGROUPS When 32-bit disk access is activated, WFW manages its own Hard Disk Cache. (Go to System.INI, [vcache] section and enter the line ForceLazyOff=x, where "x" is the drive where video data is to be stored. VIDEO BUFFERS Reserve video buffers in Movie Capture for capturing videos. To record directly to the Hard Disk, try setting buffers in DOS memory using the "Use DOS Memory" option in the Setup Capture dialog box. DO NOT SPECIFY MORE THAN 5 to 20 BUFFERS - as there is not much more space available in the lower memory range. A maximum number of buffers may be set up in Extended Memory. Enter 999 in the Buffer Box in the Setup Capture Dialog box. Try different numbers to see which allows the lowest compression factor and fewest dropped frames. APPLICATIONS Before capturing video sequences, CLOSE ALL APPLICATIONS POSSIBLE, ESPECIALLY THOSE USED FOR DISPLAYING AND EDITING VIDEO SEQUENCES. Because they consume a lot of memory, they limit the number of buffers Movie Capture can create. NETWORKS If possible, disconnect from the Network before capturing video sequences. ********************************************* VE500 VIDEO EDITOR PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED WHEN PLAYING DIGITIZED VIDEO ========================================================== Interrupted Playback - The JITTERS ================================== POSSIBLE CAUSES: Fragmented Video Data Often happens when a video is generated with an editing program. DEFRAG DISK BEFORE PLAYBACK Data Transfer Hard disk can write data faster than it can read it. The video sequence was captured in memory, then written to the disk. (This gives lesser compression rate than if captured directly to hard disk. An audio track that requires a lot of memory was added (using an editing program.) (Example: An audio track with radio quality is added where there was none before.) Audio and video sequences were recorded at the same time. Video for Windows gives priority to audio to avoid breaks in audio playback. The drawback is that portions of the video may be dropped, resulting in jerky movement. SOLUTION: REDUCE THE DATA TRANSFER RATE DURING RECORDING, BY EITHER INCREASING THE COMPRESSION RATE, OR LOWERING THE FRAME RATE. IF THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE, RECOMPRESS THE VIDEO OR AUDIO DATA WITH THE EDITING PROGRAM, USING A HIGHER COMPRESSION FACTOR. (THIS WILL, HOWEVER, SOMEWHAT REDUCE QUALITY.) Interleave Factor Video and Audio may be ineffectively arranged in the AVI files. (In AVI files, audio information for one or more video frames always comes before the first video frame. The number of frames between two audio data blocks is called the "interleave factor". Using editing programs such as ADOBE PREMIERE, the interleave factor can be modified. Experiment with different interleave factors to find the factor that eliminates the jerky movement. A factor of 1:1 has proved to be effective, but some have found 1:12 to be OK (PAL). ********************************************* PROBLEMS WITH SYNCHRONICITY ========================================================== IF VIDEO AND AUDIO WERE CAPTURED SIMULTANEOUSLY, PROBLEMS WITH SYNCHRONICITY MAY OCCUR ON PLAYBACK. TWO DIFFERENT PROBLEMS MAY OCCUR: "SHIFT" - Shifts occur when the audio portion is already recorded before the video compression chip can synchronize the video information. This can result in a shift of several frames. With some sound cards, the start of recording can be delayed, thus compensating for the shift from the start. Refer to the User Manual that came with the sound card. "DRIFT" - The considerable tolerances of the sound card quartzes, that control how audio is recorded, can lead to major discrepancies between audio and video information. Since the VE500 hardware and the sound card operate independently, deviations may occur during recording. In Professional systems such as the FAST Digital Player Recorder (DPR) for Video Machine, these units are directly linked to avoid this problem. IF AUDIO AND VIDEO ARE NOT SYNCHRONOUS: 1. SHIFT IS CONSTANT If the shift between audio and video is constant, use an editing program (such as Adobe Premiere) to correct the shift. Select the audio track and move it a few frames. For more information on editing audio tracks, consult the User's Manual that comes with the editing software. 2. IF AUDIO AND VIDEO DRIFT APART Use an editing program (such as Adobe Premiere) to extract the audio track from the AVI file and save it as a separate audio file (*.WAV) Then use an audio processing program (WinDAT or other, depending on the card) to resize the length of the audio file to the same length as the video file. Reincorporate the audio file using the editing program. COMPUTER ANIMATIONS ========================================================== BASIC INFORMATION ON USING THE VE500 TO EDIT COMPUTER ANIMATIONS AND PLAY THEM BACK ON A VCR. NUMBER OF FRAMES AND IMAGE SIZE: Any animation program should be operated at a frame rate of 25 animated frames per second (PAL TV Standard) and a resolution of 384x288 pixels. In this manner sequences can be displayed in one-field mode with the VE500, and data transferred to a VCR. Some editing programs, such as Adobe Premiere 4.0, permit the creation of a two-field video from animations at 50 Frames/second. The VE500 outputs 50 fields or 25 frames/sec. With the US TV Standard, NTSC, the VE500 outputs 60 fields, or 30 frames/sec. IMAGE QUALITY For higher quality, double resolution to 768x576, and process animations with an editing program. When creating the final video, apply a blur filter to convert the animation sequences to a resolution of 384x288 pixels. This method achieves maximum quality, though it requires more time. CONVERSION Convert animation sequences to TRUE COLOR format (using an editing program) before editing and saving them. Sequences can be compressed and saved in M-JPEG only if they are in this format to begin with. Many animation programs save image data in 8-bit paletted formats such as FLC. COMPRESSION Compress computer animation sequences using M-JPEG BEFORE EDITING THEM. This ensures significantly shorter response times for the editing software, and permits real-time true color previews in the overlay. COMPRESSION AND EFFECTS DO NOT COMPRESS PORTIONS OF SEQUENCES IF IT IS PLANNED TO ADD EFFECTS THAT WOULD REQUIRE DECOMPRESSION AND RE-COMPRESSION (SUCH AS ADDING DISOLVES, ALPHA WIPES, INSERTION OF TITLES, ETC.), SINCE RE-COMPRESSION WILL REDUCE IMAGE QUALITY. INSTEAD, MAKE AN UNCOMPRESSED COPY ON THE HARD DISK OF THE DATA TO BE PROCESSED AND COMPRESS IT ONLY AFTER ALL ENHANCEMENTS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED. Author:Susan Jenkins Subject: Dynalink Error And VE500. The Dyna-link error, when trying to capture, is causing many of the ve500 calls. It is usually because "MS vid for WIN" is corrupt! Re-installing the software, does not help. The ve500 CD does install Vid for WIN, but only if it sees NO other VID for WIN on the PC, corrupt or not. Solution: To fix, do a manual install of Video for windows. Follow the next steps. 1.- Goto FILE/RUN/BROWSE. Select CD drive. 2.- Move to \disk5\Vfwsetup\disk1. 3.- Highlight SETUP.exe and run it. ISSUE: The VE500 Video Capture ERROR: "Warning: no frames Captured. Confirm that Vertical Sync IRQ are Enabled", is MOST likely an IRQ conflict OR address conflict. SOLUTION: IRQ chooses are 10, 11, 12 and 15. Default is Q15. Address chooses are 200 280 300 380. Default is 280. In Win3.x the "Reveal VE500 MJPEG Capture Driver [MJPEG]" setup is found in Main/Control Panel /Drivers. In WIN95 the same driver is found in: Start - Settings - Control Panel - MultiMedia - Advanced - Video Compression Codecs. Highlight the driver. Click on Properties. Click on Settings. Usually IRQ 11 or IRQ 12 (if no ps2 mouse) and address 200, are your best bet. ************************************************ Issue: Ve500 getting UNRECOGNIZED FILE TYPE errors and/or VERTICAL SYNC. INTERUPT error. Solution: - Checked the properties (in MULTI-MEDIA) - Changed the irq from irq 15 to irq 11. If the interrupt is already 11 try a different IRQ. This problem is most likely caused by an IRQ conflict. ************************************************ VE500 TIPS ! Issue: Dynamic link error. Call to undefine Dynalink. Issue: INTERUPT SYNC. VECTOR ERROR. Issue: User is getting a green screen. Issue: User hears sound out of one speaker as he is editing. Issue: Jerky video playback to the tv screen. Issue: Colors keep changing. Issue: Records audio only (no video). Issue: Can't capture audio. Issue: Captures only one frame at a time. Issue: If error: "Unable to open file with the current DVMCI driver. Incompatible file type" while trying to open a captured AVI file. Issue: Target playback drive is set to 300KB/s in the "Video Editors" File/Create/Video File/ Option dialog box. Issue: Switch does not have Morph Editor as a choice in the list. Issue: Mouse cursor stays as an hour glass after capturing. Issue: If there is a problem playing edited AVI file to external TV after switching back and forth between External TV, and Windows. Issue: If any of the following errors happen while trying to Capture "Error in initialization. Please close program and try again" or "Unable to initialize DVMCI driver, please check your video for Windows runtime driver." Issue: If you want to capture to Memory, its best to not choose the "Capture destin- ation to memory" option. Issue: Windows 3.11 and capturing large AVI file problem. If the Video Capture program complains that the transfer rate is too fast or not enough space while capturing a large AVI file. Issue: Out of memory error. Issue: When running the sample video you get an error, or wrong display. Issue: Ve500 getting UNRECOGNIZED FILE TYPE errors and/or VERTICAL SYNC. INTERUPT error. ________________________________________________ Issue: Dynamic link error. Call to undefine Dynalink. Solution: Insert VE500 CD and chage to directory (disk 5) and run SETUP from that dir. _________________________________________________ Issue: INTERUPT SYNC. VECTOR ERROR. Solution: Go to the capture (in DRIVER SECTION in 3.1 or MULTI-MEDIA/ADVANCED in 95 and change the IRQ setting. ________________________________________________ Issue: User is getting a green screen. Solution: Go to CAPTURE SETTINGS and change setting to EXTERNAL. ________________________________________________ Issue: User hears sound out of one speaker as he is editing. Solution: The user has the AUDIO FORMAT set to MONO. As they are editing they will hear it out of one speaker but after playback will play out of both speakers. ________________________________________________ Issue: Jerky video playback to the tv screen. Solution: Defrag the hard drive, Change the compression, Slow hard drive. ________________________________________________ Issue: Colors keep changing. Solution: Go to VIDEO SOURCE and change input to TV or VCR. ________________________________________________ Issue: Records audio only (no video). Solution: Check the video source and if they are using RCA jacks then change it to RCA and if they are using MINI DIN change it to SVHS. ________________________________________________ Issue: Can't capture audio. Solution: Make sure that there is a (check mark) next to CAPTURE AUDIO . ________________________________________________ Issue: Captures only one frame at a time. Solution: CAPTURE METHOD is set to MANUAL have the user set it to AUTO. ________________________________________________ Issue: If error: "Unable to open file with the current DVMCI driver. Incompatible file type" while trying to open a captured AVI file. Solution: This is most likely because the file has zero bytes. The file in "Capture Destination" box is set to zero when you click on the main capture box OK. If you then cancel the capture, and try to load the current file, you will get the above errors. ________________________________________________ Issue: Target playback drive is set to 300KB/s in the "Video Editors" File/Create/Video File/ Option dialog box. The sets up a warning alarm that pops up, if the file you creating, exceeds the 300KB/s transfer rate. This value has NO effect on your HD's rate of transfer. It is only a warning the you are trans- fering at a higher rate. Solution: The reason for this warning is that later on, you may plan to transfer your AVI file to a slower device like a recordable CD, or a Tape drive. By setting this warning to match the maximum rate of the slower device, you will know if the file you are creating is set to use too many frames, or quality is to high, or size of pic is to large to be copied Successfully to the slower device. If you are playing only to use the Hard Drive and a VCR, which is what most people will do, then it would be best to set the transfer rate to the max, which is 4096kb/s. This will in effect, turn this alarm off. Make this change by going to: File/ Create/Video File/options/Advances and type 4096 in Date Transfer Rate box. Then Select "Custom" in the "Target Playback Drive" box. "Custom" is at the top of the list. Click on SAVE when done. ________________________________________________ Issue: Switch does not have Morph Editor as a choice in the list. Solution: This will be changed in a future release. For now, open the Morph Editor program once, so that it gets added to the INI file, then the Switch menu will have the choice. ________________________________________________ Issue: Mouse cursor stays as an hour glass after capturing. Solution: Usually happens on slower( 486sx25) PC's. A Temporary fix is to, switch back to the Program Manager, move the mouse around until it changes back to an arrow cursor, then switch back to the Video Capture program. Note: Even if the mouse cursor is an hour glass, it will still function like the arrow pointer. ________________________________________________ Issue: If there is a problem playing edited AVI file to external TV after switching back and forth between External TV, and Windows. Solution: Set the Playback to External TV first, then reopen the AVI file. ________________________________________________ Issue: If any of the following errors happen while trying to Capture "Error in initial- ization. Please close program and try again" or "Unable to initialize DVMCI driver, please check your video for Windows runtime driver." Solution: These error usually occur Because [MCI]Microsoft video for Windows is not loaded or is corrupt. Re-install "Video for Windows" manualy by run- ning setup.exe from the CD's \DISK5\VFWSETUP\ DISK1 directory. ________________________________________________ Issue: If you want to capture to Memory, its best to not choose the "Capture destinat- ion to memory" option. Solution: A much better way is to create a RAM drive, then when capturing, use the RAM drive letter and a file name. Remember a 10 sec 30 frame 320x240 at a quality of 50, will create a clip size of about 7mg, so a Ram drive would need to be at least that large. Your PC would need at least 16megs of Ram. For a 1 min clip with same setting, you PC would need to have at least 40 meg of ram. ________________________________________________ Issue: Windows 3.11 and capturing large AVI file problem. If the Video Capture program complains that the transfer rate is too fast or not enough space while capturing a large AVI file. Solution: Disable the 32 bit file access. ________________________________________________ Issue: Out of memory error. Solution: In some cases this error is an IRQ conflict, and not a memory error. Try a different IRQ,and/or remove addit- ional hardware to limit the possibil- ity of a conflict. ________________________________________________ Issue: When running the sample video you get an error, or wrong display. Solution: It seems that the sample video it's made to play only on the vga monitor. This is beacuse no MJPEG was used when creating the file. THIS IS NORMAL. If you want to play this file to external monitor (TV), bring the file to the video editor, and then render it (create another file) and then play it to external. (QUALITY WILL BE POOR). _______________________________________________ Issue: Ve500 getting UNRECOGNIZED FILE TYPE errors and/or VERTICAL SYNC. INTERUPT error. Solution: - Checked the properties (in MULTI-MEDIA) - Changed the irq from irq 15 to irq 11. If the interrupt is already 11 try a different IRQ. This problem is most likely caused by an IRQ conflict. Question: Why after creating my project I can play it to the Computer monitor but I get a blank screen when playing it to a VCR or a TV. *********************END FILE*********************************
