Install the card into the system. Go into WINDOWS. Go to File/Run from Program Manager and type: A:\SETUP 2. During the installation, accept all the default settings. 3. Installation will add the following lines to CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT: CONFIG.SYS REM *** THE LINES BELOW WERE ADDED BY REVEAL SOUNDFX SETUP PROGRAM *** DEVICE=C:\SOUNDFX\SFXINIT.EXE REM *** THE LINES ABOVE WERE ADDED BY REVEAL SOUNDFX SETUP PROGRAM *** AUTOEXEC.BAT REM *** THE LINES BELOW WERE ADDED BY REVEAL SOUNDFX SETUP PROGRAM *** SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T4 C:\SOUNDFX\DOSAPP\DOSMIX.EXE /M=13,13 /W=13,13 /L=13,13 /X=0 /F=13,13 /C=13,13 /I=X REM *** THE LINES ABOVE WERE ADDED BY REVEAL SOUNDFX SETUP PROGRAM *** 4. When doing a directory in the SOUNDFX DIRECTORY, there should be 18 files. The files are listed below: [.] Directory CDROM.INI [..] Directory CS4232.INI [BACKUP] Directory SFXDLL.DLL [WINAPP] Directory SCDIAG.EXE [DOSAPP] Directory SFXCONF.EXE [WINDRV] Directory TEST.DAT [CDROM] Directory SCWSS.EXE [SOUNDS] Directory SOUNDTST.WAV [SONGS] Directory SFXINIT.EXE 5. To run the diagnostic test in DOS type: SCDIAG.EXE. Note: When running this SCDIAG.EXE you will be running a test first to see if all addresses and IRQs are okay. IF YOU TRY TO RUN THIS TEXT TWICE IN SUCCESSION IT WILL FAIL ON CODEC. THE SOUND TEST WILL PLAY OK, HOWEVER. YOU CANNOT CONFIGURE ADDRESS or IRQ from DOS. You will have to reconfigure the address and IRQ in Windows (SoundFX configuration). 6. When entering Windows you should see 13 ICONS in the SoundFX Group. (A PICTURE IS INCLUDED UNDER F8/SC500 REV 3 ICONS) 7. THREE drivers will load in the control panel. (SEE SCREEN CAPTURE UNDER F8/SC500 REV 3 DRIVERS) 8. The setup screen for the Reveal Audio Driver, WSS 2.0 Enhanced is in HEAT (SCREEN CAPTURE F8/SC500 REV 3 CONFIG) 9. The setup screen for the Reveal External MIDI Driver is in HEAT (F8/SC500 REV3 MIDI) 10. The remaining address settings will be located in the SoundFX Configuration section (Icon is labelled "SOUNDFX CONFIGURATION") (See HEAT F8/SC500 REV3 SETUP) 11. The advanced setting screen from the previous picture is in HEAT as (F8/SC500 REV3 ADV) 12. The SOUND CHECK icon produces the screen shown in HEAT under F8/SC500 REV3 SND CHECK. *********************************************** Troubleshooting Guide For Sc500. Possible audio failures For Sc500. 1. Address, Irq, Dma conflicts. 2. Poor Connection between the sound card and the 16bit slot. 3. Incorrectly connected CD data cable. 4. CD data cable is bad and causing a short. 5. Bad 16bit slot on the motherboard. 6. Corrupt Sc500 rev4G software. 7. Bad Sc500 rev4g sound card. Procedure: 1. First determine if the sound card is being detected. If it is then start step A:. If it is not, then start with step B:. A: 1. Make sure that the following lines appear in the Autoexec.bat Set Sc500=c:\sc500 c:\sc500\sndinit /B set blaster=A220 I5 D1 T4 2. Run Sndinit From the Sc500 directory, and Choose "sound Test" Run 8bit, FM, and 16bit tests. If No sound is heard Check speaker connections. Make sure it is connected to the speaker port on the FX card. Also try headphones. 3. Check volume control settings. Make sure volume is at least 50%. 4. If 8bit fails, try new SB irq's, dma's, and address's. If Fm fails try diff- erent Mpu401 irq's and addresses. If 16 Bit fails try new WINDOWS Sound SYS irq's dma's & Addresses. 5. Reseat the card in a new Slot with the cd data cable disconnected. 6. Boot F8 and only load the sound driver and run the sndinit again for the sound tests. 7. Run chkdsk /f or scandisk. 8. Delete and re-install the software. 9. Check Cmos. Exspecialy if PC is not a clone. Many newer PC's with PCI slots, may have Cmos control of IRQ's that Fx card needs. Also some PC's have Cmos setings for FX cards, that must be disabled. 10. Check with 2525. May be time to RMA sc500. B: If "sound card not found" Error. 1. Make sure the software and card match! 2. Check for other HW, (scanners, other FX cards, network card etc.) Remove for trouble shooting. 3. Reseat the FX card in a new slot. Make sure it is fully seated. 4. Remove the cd data cable, at FX card. 5. If the IDE jumper is set to ON, set to OFF. IF OFF, set to ON. 6. Goto A9, above. Windows problems: Prob: No Wave or Midi sound in WIN, and no errors. Sol: 1. Level Control MUTE is ON. Turn OFF. 2. Be sure in Audio Station mixer modual, faders are not 0. 3. Exit WIN and do DOS trouble shooting. Prob: Win locks when entering or exiting. Sol? 1. If they had a previous sound card, make sure there are no virtual drivers re- maining in the system.ini. 2. Run chkdsk /f or scandisk. 3. Boot f8 and load himem.sys and the sound card drivers. 4. In system.ini change the interrupt=, dmadac= and dmaadc= settings. under the [snd16.drv] section to a different value. 5. Re-install windows in a different directory. Prob: Distorted or fast Wave sounds. sol? 1. Make sure SingleModeDma is enabled. 2. Change the dma to a different value. 3. Add DmaBufferSize=64 under the 386enh section in system.ini. Prob: Mpu401 error in windows. sol? 1. If Autoexec.bat starts WIN, be sure the sc500 lines: set sc500=c:\sc500 and sndinit /b, are before WIN. 2. Run sndinit and make sure mpu402 is enabled. 3. Try different mpu401 address and irq. Prob: No Midi sound in Win. sol? 1. Check the Audio Station mixer, make sure fm synth is above 50%. 2. Copy the midimap.cfg to the windows\ system directory. 3. Make sure Timer, Midi Mapper and Midi Sequencer is loaded in Control Panel/ Drivers. 4. Remove and re-install the sound drivers. 5. Make sure the following are in the [drivers] section of System.ini. timer=timer.drv midimapper=midimap.drv midi=sc500.drv midi1=sapi10pl.drv midi2=mpu401.drv ___________________________________________________ SC500 General Information and drawings. Saj 9/25/95 9/25/95 The following is based on ver 1.2 software, and a sc500 directory named A:\sc500, and rev A or rev B card. There is a new rev coming that looks somewhat different! As this is written, the SC500 is our top of the line sound card. Pros: 20 voice FM music synth, ie hardware SBpro. 24 voice Wavetable synth, ie Rom with 226 sampled sounds. Supports Mt32 and GM (General Midi) Cons: No output amp. New samples can NOT be loaded into WaveTable. WaveTable has 24, not 32 voices. Other: No Eprom. All setting are loaded on each boot-up, by the sndinit /b line in autoexec.bat. This line loads the settings found in c:\sc500\sc500.cfg. layout(not to scale): 4 pin cd-audio connectors ___ |--------(top)---------------------------------------------------------| | 1 '''' 1 '''' 1 '''' | | (1) (1) (1) (1) Sony Mit Pan line-out __| S M P I | R L O I A D off on line-in __| i E N T N E ''' | g F Y S A Ide jp mic __| h T U S __| t M O | | | I N game/midi | | | I | | | C |_ | |----------------------------(bottom)----------------------------------- HARDWARE: 1. The connectors on right end of card are in following order from top: Line-out (stereo mini-phono) Line-in (stereo mini-phono) Mic (stereo mini-phono) Game/midi (15 pin female D) 2. The SC500 card has ONLY one jumper, IDE On or Off, found near the center of the card. It should ALWAYS be set to Off, except when the SC500 is controlling an IDE CD. 3. There are 4 ribbon connectors for CD data ribben cable's. The order from the left edge of card are: SONY 34 pin (proprietary) Mitsumi 40 pin (proprietary) Panasonic 40 pin (proprietary) [also known as Matshita] IDE 40 pin (a secondary IDE port, hard wired at A170, IRQ 15) All pin 1's are at top of board. (see layout above) 4. There are 3 cd-audio connectors, Sony, Mit, Pan. Pin-outs are: PAN MIT Sony 1=nc 1=right 1=right 2=right 2=ground 2=ground 3=ground 3=left 3=ground 4=left 4=ground 4=left Use Pan cd-audio for all Reveal IDE cd-roms. 5. The Line-in jack, and the 4 pin cd-audio connector are combined into 1 sc500 input. Plugging a cable into Line-in does NOT disable the Cd-audio input. The only way to adjust the mix of these inputs when used together, is by external control of Line-In signel. 6. The sc500 hw manual has no listed Specifications, but the sc600 Hardware manual shows LINE-out as being 2volts rms and 100mw into hi-Z headphones. Tip=left. Ring=right. Sleeve=ground. The sc400r2 manual shows the same 2v rms and 600 ohms for line-out. And that its speaker output is 8v p-p, and 4 watts at 4 ohms. Remember, the sc500 has ONLY a Line Output (at about 100 mw?) which is about 40 times less then the sc400r2's 4 watt speaker Output. This explains why amplified speaker are needed for the sc500, and why the VM100 has problems with the sc500 (and sc400r4g which is a sc500 without Wave24 synth). 7. Again, the sc500 manual lists no specs for Inputs, but from the sc400r2 manual: Line-In =2v p-p. > then 20k ohms. Mic=10 mv to 200 mv p-p at 600 ohms or > then 20k ohms. (this would depend on the carbon/condenser jumper setting.) True, the sc500 has no such jumper, so most likely, it is hard wired at 10 mv, 600 ohms? 8. Be sure sc500 board is plugged in (fully). Push straight into slot. Push HARD, card will not break. You should hear a popping or snapping sound when card seats correctly. When fully seated, the tips of the copper contacts should show NO MORE then 1/16, above top of expansion slot. If the metal screw tab ____ interfers with card seating fully, bend it up a little. | | | Remember, many clone mother-boards are not aligned perfectly with case slots. SOFTWARE: 1. The DOS setup, test, CD set and mixer program is \sc500\SndInit.exe. To get to main screen, type SndInit and press Enter 3 times. Drawing of main setup screen: ( ) not on screen, shows other choices. Only SBpro or WSS can be selected at one time. The other will be grayed out, and values can NOT be changed. 3. ALWAYS do the DOS SNDinit sound test, before dealing with WIN problems. You can NOT boot, f5 (or W95 safe/dos) and do this test. See next for reason why. 4. In Autoexec.bat, the line "SET sc500=C:\SC500" MUST be before the line "C:\SC500\sndinit /B". Otherwise the SC500 WILL NOT initialize! Error is "Sound Card Init error. Your set sc500 Environment variable is not defined" Also, earlier ver of flops (v1.1B for instants) put FX lines at end of Autoexec. If pc boots to a menu or Win, before fx lines, sc500 will not initialize. Mpu401 error at Win start, may indicate this problem. 5. Karaoke Control in WIN, defaults to ON. Midi Map defaults to SC500 Midi, Port= Mpu401, all active. Other choices sc500 Base, Port =sc500 Midi Synth., 11 to 16 active. sc500 Ext, Port =sc500 Midi Synth, 1 to 10 active. 6. The sc500 win Level Control is 1 fader with horz balance slider, and Mute button. Mute button is black with white letters when MUTE is on. And Gray with dim black letters when Mute is off. Level Control is more or less useless. It's fader moves up and down, when the Master Faders in Audio Station, and visa-versa. But it has the ONLY Mute button, so will need to be checked in some cases. 7. The mixer module of Audio Station is the main mixer for the sc500. Both in Dos and WIN, FX default Record Device is Mic, not LINE. It only allows choice of one, not both. 9. MIC To record in Windat from a Mic, Record Select in Aud Station must be set to Mic, and Record Gain must be above 0. No other faders need to be open. If all other faders are closed, no mic sound will be on heard on LINE-Out, but it will still record. To heard mic sound on Line-out, Karaoke Control must be on, WAVE and Master faders must be above 0. Neither the setting of the Record Gain faders nor Record Select have any effect on Mic level to Line-out. 10. When LINE-in is set as the Record Device, only Record Gain fader must be above 0, to record in Windat. Line-in to Line-out is controlled by the Cd/line and Master faders. 11. The Monitor and Synth faders seem to do nothing anywhere.?
